About the Program
Senses is a new production by Finnish director Maksim Komaro, who has collaborated with Cirk La Putyka on audience favorites such as Isole, Batacchio, Kaleidoscope, and Slapstick Sonata.
Given the long-standing relationship between the director and the ensemble, which began back in 2011, Maksim Komaro decided to create a performance that celebrates this shared history, the stories of the ensemble members, of the director himself, and their connection, as well as their individuality. The show reaches even further into the past, touching upon the rich 400-year history of circus and the craft of circus art in its most fundamental form, from abstract minimalism to traditional tricks from medieval marketplaces.
Through its form, Senses engages all our senses and defends the right of circus art not to be intellectual or rational, but rather physical and emotional, focusing on the feelings through which we perceive the world. In the past, inside the circus tent, visitors could feel the closeness of the people sitting next to them, smell the popcorn, the scent of animals, and sometimes even the performers, hear the noise, and sense the omnipresent fear of injury or death. It was an all-consuming, intensely different world. Senses offers a modern transformation of this experience, a performance for all the senses.
Audiences can look forward to a variety of circus disciplines, from aerial acrobatics and teeterboard jumps to juggling, dance, pantomime, and object manipulation. The show playfully moves between circus and dance, enhanced by theatrical and visual elements.
